Why Geography?

Why is geography important?

1. Geography helps you create human connections. Whether you know the national dish of a country or can say a few sentences in someone's language, people around the world appreciate when you make an effort to understand their culture and country. Geography gives you the knowledge to do that.
2. You can win national competitions. I am the winner of the 2026 National American Geography Exam through the International Academic Competitions (IAC).
3. Job opportunities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that there are over 200,000 jobs in the United States that are related to geography. These jobs include geographers, cartographers, GIS technicians, surveyors, geoscientists, urban planners, hydrologists, and many more. In addition, many careers in the fields of business, government, and education require knowledge of geography.
4. Geography is the glue that holds other subjects together. Having knowledge of geography allows you to understand the settings of literature, the context of history, the foundation of Earth sciences, the locations of current events, the background of television shows and movies, the basis of language, and many other things. Understanding geography allows you to have a deeper understanding of many other subjects.
5. Geography makes you interesting. Since geography is not a subject that is usually taught extensively in schools, most people have only a surface-level understanding of geography. As a result, knowing geography can make you more interesting and people may respect your knowledge of the world.
6. Tangential skills. Geography is a subject that requires you to learn many other skills, such as critical thinking, data analysis, research, computer skills, and problem solving. These skills are useful in many other subjects and in life in general.
7. Spatial ability. A study by Dong et al. found that geography can improve spatial ability, which is the ability to understand and remember the spatial relations among objects. Spatial ability is important in many fields, such as architecture, engineering, and medicine. It is also important in everyday life, such as when reading maps, navigating, and understanding the layout of a room or building.
8. Quizbowl. Quizbowl is an academic competition that tests knowledge in a wide range of subjects, including geography. Since geography is often heavily tested in quizbowl, helps you understand other subjects, and is often not taught extensively in schools, it can be one of the easiest subjects to use to boost your score.
9. School. While geography is usually not a major subject taught in schools and even many universities, there is a baseline of geographical knowledge that is expected. Having knowledge of geography allows you to perform better in school, especially in subjects such as history, social studies, and science.
10. Geography is fun. Last but not least, geography is fun. Learning about the world, its people, and its cultures can be very interesting and enjoyable. Geography allows you to explore the world from the comfort of your own home, and it can be a great way to learn about the world and its people.
